From Stalin City to Eisenhüttenstadt — Time Travel to a Socialist Planned City

A guided city tour in Eisenhüttenstadt is a special experience — guaranteed! Come on a journey back in time to the history of the GDR. The personal guide is Martin Maleschka, an architect born in Eisenhüttenstadt, who is a recognized expert in the field of post-war architecture and

socialist urban development.

Eisenhüttenstadt was built in the 1950s as a socialist planned city around a huge ironworks. In its first years, the model communist city was called Stalin City, but was then renamed in the course

of de-Stalinization.

The guided 3.5-hour tour in Eisenhüttenstadt takes you back in time to the architecture and history of the GDR. Although even Hollywood star Tom Hanks is a fan of “Iron Hut City,” the city is still considered a secret tip for trips to the Berlin region!

The city tour starts at the Central Square in Eisenhüttenstadt and leads through the center to residential complexes I to IV. Right next to the city center is the huge factory site that gave the city its name

.

On the former German-Soviet Friendship Square in residential complex I, the atmosphere of the past is clearly felt. The Soviet War Memorial surprises visitors with a

special feature.

Lindenallee (formerly Leninallee) in Eisenhüttenstadt used to be the main highway, with the Friedrich-Wolf-Theater and numerous shops. In addition to the former Hotel Lunik, a huge mosaic by Walter Womacka in the style of Socialist Realism towers over the

former highway.

The Central Square shows that big things were planned here once, but not all plans were realized due to the scarcity of resources in the GDR.

With the Documentation Center for Everyday Culture in the GDR, the city has another attraction. An optional visit to this museum is worthwhile and rounds off the trip to Eisenhüttenstadt

.

More information about Eisenhüttenstadt is available in our digital tour guide.

The minimum number of participants for the city tour is 10 people. As a bonus, all participants will receive a set of 5 exclusive postcards with motifs

from Eisenhüttenstadt!
