Private city tour — the highlights of Potsdam in a retro minibus

With our all-in-one tour, you'll discover the highlights of Potsdam with the best from our most popular tours. All this in a special retro minibus “Buchanka” and with

a guide from Potsdam.

The vehicle:

The minibus, called “Buchanka” (“box bread”) because of its charming shape, is a modern Soviet “old-timer”. Up to 8 guests (+ driver) can enjoy a unique and authentic experience. And there are a few surprises waiting on board!

The tour:

The city of Potsdam is an incredibly historic city. It was not only a Prussian residence and garrison town, but is also considered one of the birthplaces of film and achieved great importance in the 20th century

.

We start in the city center at Potsdam Central Station or your hotel.

First, it's off to Babelsberg, the cradle of European cinema. Since 1912, the studios have been producing films, including productions that have made film history

.

In the immediate vicinity of the film studios, there is a villa district that became the focus of world public attention, especially in the 20th century. The world's most important heads of state moved into the mansions of movie stars and industrialists as part of the Potsdam Conference in 1945. The district on the border with West Berlin remained a restricted Soviet area for a long time

.

From Hiroshima Nagasaki Square with the Truman Villa of the then US President, it goes past the Churchill and Stalin Villa to the U NESCO World Heritage Park Babelsberg.

A walk through the beautiful park to Babelsberg Castle is primarily about the Cold War period, when the border fortifications of the Berlin Wall crossed the park and attempts to escape were made here.

The former GDR enclave of Klein Glienicke leads to Glienicke Bridge, which became world-famous as a spy bridge (film: Bridge of Spies) and was a symbol of the division of Germany as a border crossing between East and West.

We then drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Park New Garden with Cecilienhof Palace. The Potsdam Conference took place here in the summer of 1945

, where

In the immediate vicinity was the Soviet “Military Town No. 7”, a KGB secret service site, a restricted area in the middle of Potsdam for decades. A short visit to the former KGB remand

prison We drive past the Russian colony “Alexandrovka” and former barracks to the Sanssouci UNESCO World Heritage Park.

The preferred residence of Prussian King Frederick the Great rises above the terraces of a vineyard and

is Potsdam's most famous tourist attraction. The

“New Palace” palace at the other end of the huge Sanssouci Park demonstrates Prussia's rise to European power. Find out what significance this place had for the start of the First World War

.

Back in the city center, we stop at the “Rechenzentrum” cultural center, a GDR building with a 70-meter long mosaic that addresses topics such as the conquest of space. Right next to it is the controversial construction site of the garrison church

.

Finally, it's off to the Old Market, the historic center of the city with St. Nicholas Church, the City Palace, the Old Town Hall and the Barberini Palace.

The tour ends at the starting point.

A particular focus of this extraordinary tour is on the history of the 20th century, but the time before that and current discourses are also not neglected, because history is always a chain of historical events — and this is particularly evident in Potsdam!
