Private tour of Potsdam in a retro minibus UAZ “Buchanka”

Private tour in a retro minibus UAZ “Buchanka” through Potsdam

About

A special vehicle takes you through Potsdam following in the footsteps of almost 50 years of Soviet history: from the end of the Second World War to the 1990s, Potsdam became what it is today due to Soviet influence: steeped in history, exciting and controversial!

The minibus, known as “Buchanka” (“box bread”) because of its charming shape, is a modern Soviet “old-timer”. Up to 8 guests (+ driver) can enjoy a unique and authentic experience. And there are a few surprises waiting on board!

We start from Potsdam main station in the direction of the city center with a short stop at the Old Market Square. Potsdam's Soviet cemetery is located on Bassinplatz between the French and Dutch quarters, which is a final resting place for hundreds of fallen Soviet soldiers after the end of the Second World War.

Then it's off to Cecilienhof Palace, the historic site of the Potsdam Conference. In the summer of 1945, the heads of state of the Soviet Union, Great Britain and the USA met in the Neuer Garten UNESCO World Heritage Park to decide on the future of post-war Europe.

During the Cold War, an important secret service location of the Soviet KGB was located right next to the New Garden. The “Forbidden City” was also home to a remand prison, which we paid a short visit.

The “Buchanka” then takes us to Glienicke Bridge, which is world-famous as a spy bridge, not least due to the Hollywood production “Bridge of Spies”. The Potsdam Bridge of Destiny once separated East and West.

For the finale, it's off to the Potsdam data center — a GDR building threatened with demolition. A huge socialist mosaic depicts scenes of the conquest of the cosmos. This also shows the Soviet influence on everyday life in Potsdam.

At the main train station, this extraordinary Potsdam city tour ends in the “Buchanka”.
